{"id":1233,"date":"2011-06-07T13:02:07","date_gmt":"2011-06-07T11:02:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ofcourseimright.com\/?p=1233"},"modified":"2011-06-07T13:02:07","modified_gmt":"2011-06-07T11:02:07","slug":"here-comes-world-ipv6-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ofcourseimright.com\/?p=1233","title":{"rendered":"Here comes World IPv6 Day!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ofcourseimright.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/prod-phone.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-43\" title=\"iPhone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ofcourseimright.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/prod-phone.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"69\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a>As you may have read in the press some time ago, the world is running out of IP addresses.\u00a0 Really the world is running out of the current version IP addresses.\u00a0 An IP address is the means by which your computer and my computer can communicate with each other.\u00a0 Addresses are similar to phone numbers in that if we each have a unique number we both can call each other.<\/p>\n<p>How is it we&#8217;ve run out?\u00a0 Quite simply the IP version 4 address size is fixed at 32 bits, which allows for <strong>at most<\/strong> a little over 4 billion simultaneous computers to connect.\u00a0 Through the use of some sneaky tricks we are able to connect well more than 4 billion under the assumption that not device needs to be able to communicate with ever other device, but that game is getting a bit overplayed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ofcourseimright.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/ietflogo2f.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-152\" title=\"ietflogo2f\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ofcourseimright.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/ietflogo2f.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"142\" height=\"79\" \/><\/a>And so over fifteen years ago, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ietf.org\">Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)<\/a> created <a href=\"http:\/\/tools.ietf.org\/html\/rfc1883\">IPv6<\/a>, which has enough address space to stick an address on every speck of sand we have in the world.\u00a0 More precisely IPv6 can handle 2<sup>128<\/sup> or 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 addresses.\u00a0 <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>NOW THAT&#8217;S A LOT OF PASTA!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Nobody wanted IPv6 way back then when we had plenty of IPv4 address space, but now that we&#8217;re out of IPv4 addresses, <strong>it&#8217;s moving day. <\/strong>That&#8217;s because we&#8217;ve become mobile, and computers have gotten smaller.\u00a0  Not only can a cell phone access the Internet, but so can your printer,\u00a0  a car, a boat, a camera, your television, washing machine, many game  systems, and many other things.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldipv6day.org\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>World IPv6 Day<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">.<\/span> Many service providers and web sites will be enabling the next generation Internet Protocol tomorrow to see what works and what breaks.\u00a0 Will this inconvenience you even just a little?\u00a0 Probably not.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s why: your home gateway almost certainly doesn&#8217;t support IPv6, unless you&#8217;re a geek like me, in which case IPv6 day might inconvenience me.\u00a0 But I had to go to quite some inconvenience already to get IPv6 into my home, so what&#8217;s just a little bit more?<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, it&#8217;s all one big test to see how painful moving to IPv6 <strong>really<\/strong> is, and to see what breaks and what needs fixing.\u00a0 As service providers and web sites kink out bugs you&#8217;ll be hearing more about IPv6.\u00a0 Eventually, much like you did when you moved to high definition television, you&#8217;ll probably need a new router.\u00a0 If all goes well, the only difference you&#8217;ll notice is that eventually services like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skype.com\">Skype<\/a> and iChat AV will improve.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, this blog is IPv6-enabled!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As you may have read in the press some time ago, the world is running out of IP addresses.\u00a0 Really the world is running out of the current version IP addresses.\u00a0 An IP address is the means by which your computer and my computer can communicate with each other.\u00a0 Addresses are similar to phone numbers &hellip;
