{"id":1644,"date":"2013-01-25T14:28:51","date_gmt":"2013-01-25T13:28:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ofcourseimright.com\/?p=1644"},"modified":"2013-01-25T14:30:29","modified_gmt":"2013-01-25T13:30:29","slug":"scaling-the-internet-and-re-considering-routing-lisp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ofcourseimright.com\/?p=1644","title":{"rendered":"Scaling the Internet and Re-considering Routing: LISP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new experimental approach to routing on the Internet is maturing.\u00a0 It&#8217;s called <a href=\"http:\/\/tools.ietf.org\/html\/rfc6830\">Locator-Identifier Separation Protocol (LISP)<\/a>, and I am proud to have worked on it with people like Dino Farinacci, Vince Fuller, Dave Meyer, Scott Brim, Darrel Lewis, Wolfgang Riedel, and Greg Schudell.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 315px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cidr-report.org\/cgi-bin\/plota?file=%2fvar%2fdata%2fbgp%2fas2.0%2fbgp-active.txt&amp;descr=Active%20BGP%20entries%20%28FIB%29&amp;ylabel=Active%20BGP%20entries%20%28FIB%29&amp;with=step\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"BGP Routes\" alt=\"BGP Routes\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cidr-report.org\/cgi-bin\/plot?file=%2fvar%2fdata%2fbgp%2fas2%2e0%2fbgp%2dactive%2etxt&amp;start=583682400&amp;end=1359119412&amp;width=1&amp;height=1&amp;with=step&amp;ylabel=Active%20BGP%20entries%20%28FIB%29&amp;grid=\" width=\"315\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Number of BGP Routes, Courtesy cidr-report.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1993 and 1994, Paul Traina, Tony Li, and Yakov Rehkter led a rag tag effort to quickly get all the service providers to BGP 4 so that CIDR-based aggregation could save Cisco routers from hitting the dreadful 20,000 route limit.\u00a0 This involved a substantial operational change over a very short period of time, where people like Sean Doran at Sprint and Vince Fuller at BARRNET (who I think still used Proteons back then) as well as others went from router to router, quickly bringing up the new version of very fresh code.\u00a0 Talk about stress!!<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 357px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/1\/11\/World_population_%28UN%29.svg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"2007 Estlimate of Population Growth\" alt=\"File:World population (UN).svg\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/1\/11\/World_population_%28UN%29.svg\/676px-World_population_%28UN%29.svg.png\" width=\"357\" height=\"316\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Courtesy: Conscious\/Wikimedia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Today, that number of routes looks like a blip, and in fact you can barely see the drop in the graph.\u00a0 In 1994, there were already 21 million users, representing a scaling factor of just over 1000.\u00a0 With over 2.4 billion people using the network today and 440,000 routes in the system, that represents a scaling factor of just under 5,500.\u00a0 Put another way, for one\u00a0 route, on average 5,500 people use the Internet.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a lot more complex than that because generally speaking only sites that have more than one Internet connection show up in the routing table.\u00a0 Still, based on that scaling factor, to get to today&#8217;s entire world population of 7 billion would require an additional 835,000 routes or so, and all the associated processing, which still makes some of us nervous.\u00a0 In the so-called <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Internet_of_Things\"><em>Internet of Things<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>(what connected before that term?), that number becomes a bit more unhinged in as much as it is not directly tied to the population.\u00a0 Tony Li has continually cautioned us on the risks of feeling good about <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moore%27s_law\">Moore&#8217;s Law<\/a><\/em>, and how it generally doesn&#8217;t apply to specialized routing devices..<\/p>\n<p>LISP&#8217;s work, as well as that of ILNP, considered these issues. LISP functions as an overlay, not requiring the core of the Internet to have edge routes, effectively pruning any given routing tree by one level.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tools.ietf.org\/html\/rfc6837\">LISP-NERD<\/a> focused on two particular aspects:<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is it possible to make a separation between operational state and provisioned state within the routing system, on the basis that (a) the core of the network is extremely stable and (b) edge instability could be managed through the Locator Status bits in LISP to reduce the amount of managed operational state?<\/li>\n<li>Is LISP&#8217;s mapping function properly separated from the core?\u00a0 Having multiple mapping system makes it possible to test the abstraction.\u00a0 Other mapping systems would have served this purpose equally well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I still encourage the development of LISP and alternatives like ILNP under the assumption that even though 835,000 sounds like a small number, there are many restrictions built into that number, specifically that will either undo themselves, or prevent us from selling more gear (and I&#8217;m specifically thinking about multihoming in the home).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new experimental approach to routing on the Internet is maturing.\u00a0 It&#8217;s called Locator-Identifier Separation Protocol (LISP), and I am proud to have worked on it with people like Dino Farinacci, Vince Fuller, Dave Meyer, Scott Brim, Darrel Lewis, Wolfgang Riedel, and Greg Schudell.
