{"id":1851,"date":"2016-01-18T14:26:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-18T13:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ofcourseimright.com\/?p=1851"},"modified":"2016-01-18T14:27:59","modified_gmt":"2016-01-18T13:27:59","slug":"happy-birthday-ietf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ofcourseimright.com\/?p=1851","title":{"rendered":"Happy Birthday, IETF"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ietf.org\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1852\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1852\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ofcourseimright.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/ietflogotrans.gif\" alt=\"ietflogotrans\" width=\"280\" height=\"149\" \/><\/a>There&#8217;s a small group that hosts meetings three times per year, and works mostly via email that you&#8217;ve probably not heard of.\u00a0 They&#8217;re called the Internet Engineering Task Force or IETF.\u00a0 The women and men who participate in the IETF create standards by which computers communicate with one another.\u00a0 You&#8217;re reading this note thanks to several of those standards.\u00a0 They are collected in documents known as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rfc-editor.org\">Requests for Comments or RFCs<\/a> that are available for anyone to read.\u00a0 In fact, you can write your own if you want.<\/p>\n<p>The IETF became important to me at a time when we were just learning how to manage congestion (more demand than there is bandwidth).\u00a0 It stayed important when we needed more efficient routing protocols.\u00a0 Through internationalization efforts at the IETF, the Internet grew from a U.S. government network to a worldwide network of networks that supports people speaking just about any language.<\/p>\n<p>Last week marked the IETF&#8217;s 30th birthday.\u00a0 To the thousands of people who have participated over those thirty years, especially to those who aren&#8217;t with us today, I want to say this: Thank you.\u00a0 Thank you to those who have worked to make TCP\/IP-based networking suitable for the way we live, work, and play.
