{"id":31,"date":"2008-07-05T14:00:52","date_gmt":"2008-07-05T12:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ofcourseimright.com\/?p=31"},"modified":"2008-07-04T12:37:31","modified_gmt":"2008-07-04T10:37:31","slug":"the-cias-torture-teachers-communist-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ofcourseimright.com\/?p=31","title":{"rendered":"The CIA&#8217;s torture teachers: Communist China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright alignnone size-medium wp-image-32\" style=\"float: right;\" title=\"bush\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ofcourseimright.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/bush.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"158\" \/>Continuing our theme from Independence Day, let&#8217;s talk about freedoms and rights.\u00a0 For those such as Alan Dershowitz who advocate such things as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.harvard.edu\/faculty\/dershowitz\/Articles\/torturewarrants.html\">torture warrants<\/a>, or for simple apologists for the Bush administration&#8217;s shameful behavior, now comes this little <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/07\/02\/us\/02detain.html?_r=1&amp;scp=1&amp;sq=communist+1957+torture&amp;st=nyt&amp;oref=slogin\">ditty<\/a> from the New York Times about how the CIA took a crash course in rough interregation techniques for Guantanamo Bay just after the Towers came down.\u00a0 What they probably didn&#8217;t know was that the material was derived from a 1957 Chinese training manual that an airforce psychologist discredited as generating false confessions.\u00a0 Of course, even if the method did work, we now know who this administration turns to for guidance: a discredited regime used by a form of government we despised.\u00a0 This brings me to a point that I&#8217;ve always believed: fasism, communism, whatever: each can be used to subjugate citizens in just the same manner.\u00a0 It&#8217;s just a slightly different rationale.\u00a0 Yes, that says that it can and has happened in the United States, and it goes back to what <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikiquote.org\/wiki\/Benjamin_Franklin\">Benjamin Franklin<\/a> said: <strong>Those who would give up E<span style=\"font-variant: small-caps; text-transform: lowercase;\">ssential<\/span> L<span style=\"font-variant: small-caps; text-transform: lowercase;\">iberty<\/span> to purchase a little T<span style=\"font-variant: small-caps; text-transform: lowercase;\">emporary<\/span> S<span style=\"font-variant: small-caps; text-transform: lowercase;\">afety<\/span>, deserve neither L<span style=\"font-variant: small-caps; text-transform: lowercase;\">iberty<\/span> nor S<span style=\"font-variant: small-caps; text-transform: lowercase;\">afety.<\/span><\/strong> We&#8217;ve already <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ofcourseimright.com\/?p=13\">seen<\/a> that U.S. Senator Kit Bond was a perfect example.\u00a0 Of course, Franklin was defending against a <em>different<\/em> King George.<\/p>\n<p>With our King George and in this case, we have to worry about what moral authority we have lost.\u00a0 Those Americans who happen to be abroad and in the wrong place and the wrong time will be the sorry beneficiaries of this president&#8217;s legacy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Continuing our theme from Independence Day, let&#8217;s talk about freedoms and rights.\u00a0 For those such as Alan Dershowitz who advocate such things as torture warrants, or for simple apologists for the Bush administration&#8217;s shameful behavior, now comes this little ditty from the New York Times about how the CIA took a crash course in rough &hellip;
