{"id":541,"date":"2008-12-20T16:00:57","date_gmt":"2008-12-20T14:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ofcourseimright.com\/?p=541"},"modified":"2008-12-20T16:00:57","modified_gmt":"2008-12-20T14:00:57","slug":"by-request-a-brief-description-of-the-leap-second","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ofcourseimright.com\/?p=541","title":{"rendered":"By Request: A brief description of the leap second"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every day of every year nominally lasts 24 hours, or 1,440 minutes, or 86,400 seconds.\u00a0 This December 31st, as happens on irregular occasions, will actually last 86,401 seconds.\u00a0 You are of course familiar with leap days, which occur on leap years, which occur every four years, except on century boundaries unless the century boundary happens to be divisible by 400 (as was the case in 2000).<\/p>\n<p>Leap seconds are not so easy to predict.\u00a0 They are based on irregularities in the Earth&#8217;s rotation, as measured by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iers.org\/\">International Earth Rotation Service<\/a>, and can happen on either June 30 or December 31.\u00a0 When it happens, there is an official time that is December 31, 23:59:<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>60<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 UTC is adjusted accordingly, which is what just about all local time is derived from.<\/p>\n<p>As it turns out, we haven&#8217;t seen leap second in a while, and here is why:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ofcourseimright.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/lod.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-542\" title=\"Graph of deviation from 86,400\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ofcourseimright.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/lod.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"709\" height=\"483\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This information shows deviation from 86,400 seconds in terms of the average time it took for Earth to rotate once for each day of the year.\u00a0 Since 1997, the world has actually <strong>slowed down<\/strong>, although there&#8217;s been a slight pickup in pace over the last two years.<\/p>\n<p>How do we know that the Earth slowed down?\u00a0 You might think that the definition of time is based on the Earth&#8217;s rotation and its orbit around the sun, but in fact that definition is somewhere between disputed and obsolete.
