{"id":930,"date":"2010-03-31T13:48:03","date_gmt":"2010-03-31T11:48:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ofcourseimright.com\/?p=930"},"modified":"2010-03-31T13:48:03","modified_gmt":"2010-03-31T11:48:03","slug":"remembered-jaime-escalante-and-the-public-schools-of-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ofcourseimright.com\/?p=930","title":{"rendered":"Remembered: Jaime Escalante and the Public Schools of California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: 0pt none; margin: 4px;\" src=\"http:\/\/i.cdn.turner.com\/cnn\/2010\/US\/03\/30\/escalante.obit\/story.escalante.wb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/>CNN <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2010\/US\/03\/30\/escalante.obit\/index.html?hpt=T2\">reported<\/a> the death of legendary teacher Jaime Escalante on Tuesday.\u00a0 Escalante was a mathematics teacher in East Los Angeles.\u00a0 He was made famous only in part by his wondrous ways with students, but also by the sheer disbelief that the state and district had that any teacher could helped students in that district score well in math.\u00a0 He was then immortalized in the movie Stand and Deliver, starring Edward James Olmos.<\/p>\n<p>We need more teachers like him, and we need more people to believe that there can be teachers like him.\u00a0 The so-called &#8220;No Child Left Behind&#8221; Act, is leaving all children behind, and desperately needs to be reformed.\u00a0 Perhaps one thing we could do is pay for more teachers&#8217; educations in exchange for several years of service.\u00a0 Perhaps another thing we can do is fund schools properly.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a particularly serious problem in California, with no easy answer.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed-data.k12.ca.us\/Articles\/Article.asp?title=Guide%20to%20California%20School%20Finance%20System\">Here is a well written article<\/a> that explains how the local tax base cannot even take matters into their own hands unless they expend a WHOLE LOT.
