return false;\" title=\"View Results Of This Poll\">View Results<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n\t<\/form>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"polls-8-loading\" class=\"wp-polls-loading\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ofcourseimright.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-polls\/images\/loading.gif\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" alt=\"Loading ...\" title=\"Loading ...\" class=\"wp-polls-image\" \/>&nbsp;Loading ...<\/div>\n\n<p>Before <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\">Apple<\/a> released the i<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ofcourseimright.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/prod-phone.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-43\" title=\"iPhone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ofcourseimright.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/prod-phone.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"101\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a>Phone it irked me that the pace of technology for cell phones lagged at an incredibly  slow pace, the user interfaces were crap, and the deal between cell phone providers and service providers seemed to completely leave the consumer out of the value chain.<\/p>\n<p>Apple changed all of that by going \u201c<strong>over the top<\/strong>\u201d, picking a winner in each market, but limiting what deal those winners would get.\u00a0 That was great, and really stuck it to SPs (who got rich anyway).\u00a0 They&#8217;re trying to do the same thing with the iPad, but in the meantime Apple has changed the accepted development model for businesses.<\/p>\n<p>It <strong>used<\/strong> to be that you needed rich web connectivity, and that was good enough.\u00a0 Now you have to have an Apple <strong>app<\/strong> in order to reach all of those customers who love their iPhones.\u00a0 Good examples of this include Facebook, Airlines, and even <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bernie_Ecclestone\">that dinosaur<\/a> who is responsible for Formula 1 promotion, Bernie Ecclestone.\u00a0 Yes, even F1 has an app.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the problem: many of the Apps are nothing more than shells for garbage that companies want to shovel at you, and they don&#8217;t want others using <strong>\u201c<\/strong>their data\u201d.\u00a0 A perfect example is American Express, who requires an app in order to view flight reservations.\u00a0 <strong>THERE ALREADY ARE MANY SUCH APPS.<\/strong> One of them is your calendar program.\u00a0 One thing you might want to do is download reservation information into your calendar.\u00a0 But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanexpress.com\">American Express<\/a>&#8216; travel web site <a href=\"http:\/\/www.getthere.com\">GetThere.Com<\/a> won&#8217;t let you do it.\u00a0 You have to download their app.<\/p>\n<p>And GetThere is getting sneakier, as they no longer send many corporate travelers a full reservation in email, but instead simply send a pointer to their web page.\u00a0 Why are they doing this?\u00a0 Because they don&#8217;t want others like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tripit.com\">TripIt<\/a> to capitalize on \u201ctheir\u201d (really <strong>your<\/strong>)  information.<\/p>\n<p>And so there seems to be no incentive for these bad players to be good players in an iPhone world, in spite of the fact that there are perfectly capable standards and programs and libraries to deal with much of stuff that&#8217;s being exchanged.\u00a0 What can be done to change that?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Take the OfCourseImRight Poll Before Apple released the iPhone it irked me that the pace of technology for cell phones lagged at an incredibly slow pace, the user interfaces were crap, and the deal between cell phone providers and service providers seemed to completely leave the consumer out of the value chain.
